A walk from Ambleside to Hartsop near Patterdale

Wall meets sky

This was  just to have been a short walk as the weather was not too good.... By the time we arrived in the Brothers- water Inn it had taken us nearly 6 hours! (Perhaps we're getting too  old and slow) !!  We started of up past Stock Ghyll  Waterfalls in Ambleside and up onto Wansfell.  A good climb to the top but the views are great as you get higher. From here it's along the ridge to St Raven's Edge (otherwise known as the hill behind the Kirkstone Inn) and along to Pike How.

The weather by now had definitely picked up with some blue sky over to the north west.  We met up with an old chap in his eighties who had been walking for years, and as a pair of boots wore out he would bury them on the side of Red Screes in a small cave which had turned into a shrine to his past walks - he said there were five pairs up there now !

Up onto John Bell's Banner and visited the cairn where a cross had been placed - I don't remember seeing the cross last time I was up here but there is another plaque up now - so !

Hellvellyn from John Bell's Banner By now, there was a couple of inches of snow which gave a winter look but we were walking with just our t-shirts on - not what I expected. From here we could look across to the Helvellyn range, not much snow over there but the view gave a good aspect of the glacial structure with all the ridges leading down to Patterdale and Ullswater.
We now had a wonderful view down the ridge to Ullswater, the blue sky was starting to go and so must we. It was Valentines day and I was taking my wife out for a meal, so I couldn't be late.  The drop down to Hartsop is a bit  on the steep side I have to say, but at least we were going down it as appose to up!

We were down and in the Brotherswater Inn within the hour, and just enough time for a beer before our lift turned up.

All in all, a good day out.
