Tarn Hows

Situated between Ambleside, Hawkshead and Coniston, Tarn Hows is a wonderful place you can visit over and over again. Its one of those walks you can do with children, with friends or when you're not up to a full day on the hill. It's short enough on bitterly cold winter days to get just that "bit of fresh air" ,or in summer, to spend time having a picnic.

A visit to Tarn Hows can be tied in to lots of other activities which involve eating and drinking.!  You could visit the small, quaint village of Hawkshead first, then on the way over to Coniston, stop off at the Tarn, or, visit the Drunken Duck Inn with it's own micro brewery, have lunch, a beer or coffee (very nice food, very nice beer). There is also Brantwood (once the home of John Ruskin, the poet) on the shore of Coniston, which has a nice coffee shop too.

As you drive over the small country lane by Tarn Hows and reach the top of the hill, the view suddenly hits you! On days like this you can see most of the surrounding mountains,  such as Coniston Old Man and Wetherlam etc.....

There is lots of parking on the National Trust car park just opposite where the well kept paths lead down to the Tarn.

There are lots of benches to rest on and take in the views. A full circular walk around the Tarn should take less than one hour and is well worth a visit.
